I have seen everything from Gerson diets, coffee enemas, crazy mono diets, trending cancer “cures” and just about every natural remedy anyone has promoted in the hope of winning the fight against cancer.
A cancer diagnosis can feel like the ground has shifted beneath your feet. In the rush of appointments, unfamiliar terminology, and overwhelming decisions, it’s easy to feel powerless, frustrated, and hopeless. It is also easy to fall prey to one-size fits all advice as well the advice of other patients on cancer forums, groups or in chat rooms.
One size fits all advice can even be in the guise of targeted alternative treatments offered by various integrative doctors or overseas clinics. Even some conventional cancer treatments offer a one size fits all approach as new immunotherapies move from experimental treatments to the clinic. These new treatments are being added in to many treatment protocols for cancer patients – but they are not without their sometimes-serious side effects.
According to my online research, becoming an immunologist typically involves completing an undergraduate degree, followed by a medical degree or PhD in immunology, residency training, and usually a fellowship. This process can take approximately 9 to 15 years, depending on the specific path chosen.
I navigate some clients to a Japan-based highly experienced cancer immunology specialist and researcher. He has been providing cell based natural immune therapy clinically for cancer patients since the early 1990’s. His services are invaluable to my navigated clients. We do not have an equivalent in Australia.
To become a Medical Oncologist, for example in Queensland, you need to apply for fellowship with The Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Fellowship is a 6-year (full time) training pathway consisting of 3 years (full time) Adult Internal Medicine – Basic Training followed by 3 years (full time) Advanced Training in Medical Oncology.
The above careers represent a lot of hours of training and science and yet the medical system has many gaps and flaws when it comes to Patient Centred Care Approach. Even precision medicine is taking the AI path and herein advancing medicine is in danger of even further removal of the patient from the healing picture puzzle.
On the other hand, in the quest for patient empowerment many patients embark on their cancer journey with little knowledge of science, biology, anatomy, or physiology or how to discern pseudo research from valid-evidenced based research. Not enough knowledge leaves patients vulnerable to being led down paths that are unlikely to yield results for the efforts expended.
It is a minefield and that is why dedicated cancer navigation plays an important role in cancer survivorship. The rarer the cancer or more difficult to treat patients can easily get lost in the cancer maze.
How do you discern if a treatment is valid and if will suit your personalised needs, particular if you are trying to find a middle path.
